Dr. Kevin McElwee

Kevin McElwee, DVM

Dr. Kevin McElwee was born in a rural central West Virginia farming community. His interest in veterinary medicine began at an early age and was piqued by his school librarian aunt who gave him James Herriot’s books to read. During his summers, he worked at a mixed animal practice, gaining experience with large and small animals and cementing his decision to pursue veterinary medicine as a career. He attended West Virginia University and graduated with a degree in Animal and Veterinary Science.

Following graduation from the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 1988, Dr. McElwee began practice at Cartersville Animal Hospital. Under the guidance of Dr. Moore, he began the process of learning to manage and run a veterinary hospital and became an owner in 1997.

Dr. McElwee has always been active in organized veterinary medicine, serving as President of the Northwest Georgia Veterinary Medical Association in 1994, then as a member of the Board of Directors to the Georgia VMA. While a director, he was Chairman of the Public Relations committee, member of the Executive Board, Chaired several task forces, and served on the Legislative Action Committee, Budget and Finance Committee, and on the working group that developed the State of Georgia’s Spay-Neuter license plate program. He was elected in 2005 to the Presidency of the GVMA. During his yearlong term, Dr. McElwee travelled the state, meeting and listening to other Veterinarian’s issues and concerns, worked at the State Capitol on legislative issues that dealt with veterinarians, spoke to the students at the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine several times, and wrote the Policies and Procedures Manual for the GVMA.

Dr. McElwee has been a long time member of the Cartersville-Bartow County Exchange, serving as President and as Chair to the annual Exchange Club Christmas Parade. He is a member of Sam Jones Memorial United Methodist Church and has served on their Administrative Board and on the Nominations and Leadership Development Committee.

He met his wife Dana in 1995 and they were married in 1998. They have two children, a daughter named Ally and a son named Kase. They own an 11-year old golden retriever and a 2-year-old cat. Dr. McElwee is an avid cyclist.
